Epidavros is mainly known for the huge and very well preserved theater, in which theater performances are still held today. But the meaning of the ancient place, which was dedicated to the god Asklepios, was not to offer "cultural pleasures", but the healing of the patients. That's why there was almost something like  a hospital. In the museum you can still see the surgical equipment used to perform operations at that time. But back then - not like today - it was not only limited to drug and surgical treatments, but the psychological circumstances of the sick were also included in the therapy. Culture, theater, religion and sport were part of the therapy program. Incidentally, the inhabitants of Epidaurus had their main town on the coast and a second, smaller theater there.
