The citadel of Mycenae is one of the highlights of each Peloponnese traveller. The first traces of a settlement there was on the isolated hill already 3500 BC in the Neolithic period. Its cultural peak was about 1400-1300 BC. The site of Mycenae named the prehistoric bronze age.
In the area of Argolis there are many prehistoric settlements and even prehistoric  infrastructure. Almost every castle on a hilltop has traces of this Mycenean period.
Mycenae was made famous by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who discovered Troy also. He dug in 1876 in Mycenae, but was not the first, which began archaeological research there, as long as 1700  Venetian engineer excavated the Lion Gate.
The highlights of Mycenae's visit are the Lion Gate, the great tombs round, the palace, the fountain-tunnel and the "Attreus dome grave".
There is an absolutely remarkable museum that should not be left unvisited.
