Enku Mulugeta – A Pioneer of Geotourism in Ethiopia
For many years, Enku Mulugeta has guided our volcanological expeditions to the Danakil Desert, the Erta Ale volcano, and the colorful hydrothermal fields of Dallol. He knows not only these world-famous volcanic regions but also many of Ethiopia’s lesser-known landscapes.
In 2012, he played a key role in organizing our geological and mineralogical pilot journey, which laid the foundation for future expeditions to the geological treasures of Ethiopia.
Enku recognized early on that sustainable geotourism is a powerful way to support his country — not through short-term aid, but through lasting development. Responsible tourism creates jobs, local initiatives, and educational opportunities that strengthen remote regions and raise awareness of their geological and cultural importance.
He has a rare gift for connecting people. Working with diverse communities across the country, Enku fosters genuine encounters between visitors and locals. Traveling with him means experiencing Ethiopia with knowledge, warmth, and respect.
In recent years, Enku has been deeply involved in the planning and creation of several UNESCO Global Geoparks in Ethiopia, a project that is also close to the heart of Nature Discovery Tours. These Geoparks aim to preserve the nation’s unique geological heritage while opening new pathways for education, research, and sustainable tourism.
It is especially inspiring that his daughter has begun to follow in his footsteps, organizing and leading tours of her own — a clear sign that the spirit of geotourism in Ethiopia continues to grow and flourish.
