On the summit of an former volcano

The Oelberg also has a volcanic origin. However, today’s summit was never the actual crater – that must have been located several hundred meters higher. Standing here means you are essentially inside the remains of the former volcano.

A clear sign of this are the striking basalt columns, formed when basaltic magma cooled slowly and developed its characteristic columnar shapes. Just below the summit, in a former quarry, these fascinating structures can still be admired. Further down the slope, another abandoned quarry with a small lake also reveals impressive basalt columns.

From the Oelberg, visitors enjoy sweeping views of the other peaks of the Siebengebirge, all of volcanic origin. Around 23 million years ago, this was a vast volcanic mountain range – perhaps comparable to present-day Mount Etna.

The best moments to experience the Oelberg are at sunrise and sunset – magical times of day that offer photographers unforgettable opportunities.
