🌿 Methana – Relaxation, Nature & Authentic Greek Enjoyment
Whether you’re seeking peace and quiet or want to actively explore the landscape, this green volcanic peninsula offers both –
with excellent value for money and the true spirit of authentic Greece. 💙
Travelling to Athens is easy and usually quite affordable from most major European airports.
When booked early (please coordinate with us!), flights typically range between €350–500 per person.
Be cautious with so-called “bargain” offers – many of them exclude luggage, seat selection, or involve inconvenient stopovers.
After landing at Athens International Airport (ATH), several transfer options are available:
🚌 Express buses to Piraeus or the city centre (Syntagma Square)
🚕 Taxis directly from the airport – always check prices in advance or use the official taxi stand
🚗 Rental car – our clear recommendation for this travel program!
With a rental car (e.g. easily booked via Check24), you remain flexible and can explore all the sights and beaches of the Methana peninsula independently.
From the airport, take the motorway towards Corinth, then exit at Epidavros.
The drive to Methana takes about 2.5–3 hours.
Alternatively, Methana can also be reached by sea.
From Piraeus Port, ferries operate to Methana (seasonal schedule).
If there is no direct ferry, the Poros route is ideal:
Take a fast boat to Poros, then a short crossing to Galatas, and from there a brief taxi ride to Methana.
🚢 Summary of travel options to Methana
✈️ Flight to Athens → 🚗 Rental car → Methana
✈️ Flight to Athens → 🚌 Bus/taxi to Piraeus → 🚢 Ferry to Methana
🚢 Alternative: Ferry to Poros → 🚖 Taxi via Galatas to Methana
🏝️ Arrival on Methana
Your accommodation hosts will welcome you either at the harbour or directly at your lodging and show you your room.
Since everything on Methana is central and easy to find, you can easily relax after arrival –
perhaps enjoy a drink at one of the seaside cafés or have your first Greek meal at a local taverna. 🍷🌅
Depending on the temperature, an early morning walk to the small fishing harbour on the western side of Methana is well worth it.
Right next to Nisaki, you’ll discover impressive ancient walls, and nearby you can find a quiet beach spot for swimming and relaxation.
During the summer season, the small beach bar of Antoni Maltezou often invites visitors to enjoy a refreshing drink by the sea. 🍹
Around midday, it’s the perfect time for a break at the B&B Café – ideal for a cold Mythos beer, a strong Greek coffee, or some light snacks in between.
In summer, it’s most pleasant to enjoy your main meal later in the evening, when the air cools down and the atmosphere in the tavernas becomes especially inviting. 🌙
If you’ve booked a rental car, we recommend taking a first-day drive around the Methana peninsula.
It’s a great way to get an overview of Methana’s beautiful bays, volcanic landscapes, and traditional villages, giving you a perfect start to your holiday adventure. 🚗🌋
The picturesque fishing harbour of Vathy is easily accessible by rental car or taxi and counts among the most beautiful natural harbours in the Saronic Gulf.
It is well known beyond Methana for its excellent seafood tavernas, where freshness is guaranteed – many of the fish and seafood dishes are caught and landed right in the harbour itself.
If you follow the coastal road south from Vathy, you’ll reach the popular Almyra Beach – perfect for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
Later in the afternoon, when the heat subsides, it’s worth visiting the ancient acropolis of Vathy, which overlooks the harbour. From the top, you can enjoy spectacular views over the bay and the surrounding volcanic landscape of Methana. 🌋
End your day with a delicious dinner at one of the harbour tavernas, such as Taverna Theoni, where you can savour authentic Greek cuisine while watching a magnificent sunset over the eastern Peloponnese coast. 🌅🍷
During summer, you can easily reach the island of Poros by one of the boats departing from Methana.
The crossing takes about 45 minutes and offers beautiful views of the eastern Peloponnese coast and the fertile Troezen region.
Alternatively, you can also reach Poros by land: drive or take a taxi to Galatas, where small ferries or water taxis make the short 5-minute crossing to Poros. 🚤
Once on Poros, you’ll find numerous shops, cafés, and tavernas lining the lively alleys of the island town.
Here you can experience the vibrant island life that makes Poros such a beloved destination.
A must-see is the Archaeological Museum of Poros, which exhibits Mycenaean artefacts from Methana, Galatas, and the Troezen region – offering a fascinating glimpse into the ancient history of the Saronic Gulf. 🏺
For a more relaxed activity, take a leisurely walk up to the clock tower of Poros, the island’s most famous landmark.
From the top, you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the town, the harbour entrance, and the opposite mainland of Galatas. 🌅
For your return journey, you have full flexibility:
either take the ferry back from Poros to Methana, or travel via Galatas by boat and continue by taxi, bus, or rental car to Methana – perfect for planning your trip just the way you like it! 🚗⛴️
During the warm summer months, it’s best to plan your visit to the impressive historic lava dome of Methana for the late afternoon hours.
The excursion combines perfectly with a refreshing swim stop: just 400 m east of Methana town, you’ll find the picturesque bay of Limniona, featuring a small sandy beach, a cozy beach bar, and convenient parking. 🏖️
In the afternoon, take a 30-minute drive to the beautiful mountain village of Kameni Chora, where you can enjoy a cold frappé or a glass of local wine at the charming Vinotherapevtirio. 🍷
From there, continue to the parking area at the volcano of Kameni Chora.
The ascent to the heart of the lava dome takes about 20 minutes.
⚠️ Sturdy footwear and surefootedness are essential, as the trail leads across rugged volcanic terrain.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular volcanic landscape of massive lava boulders intertwined with pine trees.
The view over the Saronic Gulf and the nearby island of Agistri, especially at sunset, is truly unforgettable – a genuine hidden gem of Greece! 🌅
💡 Tip: Bring a flashlight for your descent after sunset.
End your day with a delicious dinner at a harbour taverna in Vathy, the perfect conclusion to a day full of nature, geology, and authentic Greek charm. 🇬🇷✨

The eastern part of the Methana peninsula is absolutely worth exploring – a scenic round trip you shouldn’t miss!
Start your journey with a visit to the Mycenaean excavation site dating back to around 1400–1200 BC, discovered in 1990.
Many of the pottery and artefacts unearthed here can also be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Poros – but at this site, you’ll experience the ancient remains firsthand, right where they were found. 🏺✨
Next, continue to the charming fishing harbour of Agios Georgios, where a small sandy beach awaits. It’s family-friendly and perfect for children, offering safe and shallow waters for a relaxing swim. A small taverna nearby provides refreshing drinks and snacks. 🐟🏖️
But the real insider tip lies a bit further north: in Agios Nikolaos, right at the entrance of the village, you’ll find the historic thermal bath “Pausanias”, fed by natural warm springs.
A soothing bath in this volcanically heated water is a wonderful way to recharge your energy. 💧🌋
Right next door, you’ll discover the cozy taverna Las Olas, where Maria, the owner from Spain, serves an authentic paella and other Mediterranean delights – a culinary highlight to round off a perfect day on Methana! 🍷🥘
Your last vacation day on Methana is the perfect opportunity to relax once more at one of your favourite beaches or to explore the surroundings of this volcanic peninsula.
A highly recommended trip is a visit to the famous Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus or to the Asklepion Sanctuary of Troezen – both rich in history and atmosphere.
Afterwards, you can take a refreshing break at the cool Kremastos Stream in the Diavologefiro gorge, a hidden natural paradise ideal for a short rest. 🌿💦
Hiking enthusiasts will also find Methana a true paradise!
Numerous well-marked hiking trails lead through the volcanic mountain landscapes, ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes.
Take advantage of our free hiking map and the Methana App, which offers detailed route descriptions, GPS navigation, and local tips.
And don’t worry – you don’t have to do everything on foot!
You can easily take a taxi to the starting point of a hike and walk back at your own pace to Methana town. 🚶♀️🚕
The Methana–Troezen–Poros region offers a fascinating mix of nature, history, and culture – boredom is simply impossible here! 🇬🇷✨
For your return trip to Athens, please make sure to allow plenty of time for your journey.
We recommend arriving at Athens International Airport (ATH) at least two hours before departure. 🕑
If you’re driving back by rental car, it’s wise to plan for some extra time buffer, as traffic can be heavy, especially around the Athens metropolitan area. 🚗
If you’re returning by ferry to Piraeus, allow about one hour of travel time for the Airport Express Bus from Piraeus Port to Athens Airport.
Again, it’s best to plan generously – so your return journey stays relaxed and stress-free. 🌿🧳
This trip is designed as an individual self-guided program and does not include a fixed tour guide.
However, if you happen to meet Tobias Schorr during your stay on Methana, optional joint excursions or activities can be arranged spontaneously, depending on availability.
Since Nature Discovery Tours does not have direct access to flight booking systems, our trips are deliberately offered without flights.
This gives you maximum flexibility, especially if you are travelling from outside Germany or prefer to look for your own best flight deals. 🌍💼
