Discover the 4 Canaric volcano islands!
The nature, geology and culture are the main points of this journey that starts at LANAZAROTE island. Lanzarote, La Palma, El Hierro and Tenerife are the most fascinating volcanoes of the Canary islands. This round trip is suitable for everybody who is physically fit, loves nature and is interested in volcanoes.
The tour is a combination of round trips in a small bus and hiking tours. There is plenty time planned for taking photographs. The Canary islands are famous for their relatively young volcanoes. The last (submarine) eruption took place in 2012 near the coast of El Hierro island and further eruptions in near future are possible.
The geologist and tour guide Aurelién and his co-guide and photographer Tobias Schorr will show you the beauties and geology of the 4 Canary islands.
Day 1: Arrival on Lanzarote
For practical reasons, we will meet at the Lanzarote Arrecife airport and then drive to our apartments in ARRECIFE.
Day 2: Hiking tour to the Caldera Blanca
After a good breakfast we will drive to the starting point of our hike towards the volcanoes of Caldera Blanca. We will wnder through a landscape of lava flows. At one point we may see an old lava cave before we get to the central craters. If we are lucky, we can discover the typical atlantic lizards and geckos. In the rocks we will find lots of green olivine crystals. At late afternoon we will get back to our apartments in Arecife.
Day 3: The caldera of the volcano Teide
On a scenic road we will ascend to the caldera of Teide volcano. On our way we will have a stop at a nice sample of a lava rose. At Las Cañadas del Teide we will start our hike to the rim of the caldera with an absolute great view to the snow covered volcano Teide. Later we will descend on the mountain road and will pass the volcano Montana Chinyero, the youngest volcano of Tenerife. At the western coast we will return to our hotel in Puerto de la Cruz.
Day 4: El Teno Massiv
Today we hike in the El Teno massif in great scenery.
Day 5: Flight La Palma - Tenerifa - El Hierro
Like before we have to fly back to Tenerife north aiport to change the airplane towards El Hierro island. After 4o Minutes we will land at the Valverde airport and get a transfer to our hotel in Frontera. If we are lucky we will catch a great view of Teide volcano...
Day 6: Drive on a scenic mountain route and a walk to the Malpaso mountain top
Today we will have a drive on the scenic route to the highest parts of El Hierro. We will have a walk through the foggy forest to the mountain top of Malpaso. If there is good weather, we may see also the craters of Tanganasoga volcano. It is one of the most possible areas on El Hierro to expect new volcanic eruptions in future.
Day 7: Visit of the harbour La Restinga and the lava fields
In 2012 a submarine volcano erupted south of La Restinga harbour. For months this eruption was in the media. Even the volcano stopped its activity, there are many signs of older lava flows that seem like the ones on Hawaii. We hike around La Restinga. On our tour back to Frontera, we will enjoy the scenic landscape and many old volcanoes. In the last day light we will have great opportunities for great photos.
Day 8: Hiking tour to the Caldera Blanca
After a good breakfast we will drive to the starting point of our hike towards the volcanoes of Caldera Blanca. We will wnder through a landscape of lava flows. At one point we may see an old lava cave before we get to the central craters. If we are lucky, we can discover the typical atlantic lizards and geckos. In the rocks we will find lots of green olivine crystals. At late afternoon we will get back to our apartments in Arecife.
Day 9: Visitor´s center & the caldera Taburiente
Today we will drive to the visitor´s center of the caldera Tamburiente to understand the geology of the island. Later we will have a hike into the valley of the caldera Tamburiente or at some interesting lava flows (depending on weather conditions!). Dinner at the downtown of Santa Cruz.
Day 10: Tour to the volcanoes San Antonio & Teneguia 1971
Today we will drive along the western coast of La Palma to the south cape of the island at the village Los Canarios. At the visitor´s centre we will learn about these young volcanoes and will have a little walk along the crater rim of the St. Antonio volcano. Later we will descend to the volcano Teneguia which erupted in 1971 and created the lava flows towards the sea. There will be new eruptions in future.
Day 11: Flight El Hierro - Tenerife
Depending on the flight time we will go directly to the aiport of Valverde or do a last round trip in the El Golfo valley. After arriving on Tenerife we will have a transfer to our hotel in the town of Orotava.
Day 12: Tour to the village Masca
Today we will discover one of the most scenic and breathtaking routes of Tenerife island. On adventurous roads through valleys and passing old cinder cones, we will arrive at an landscape that reminds us southern America. At Masca we will have great photographic opportunities. There is time for spontaneous activities and routes.
