One of the most fascinating volcanoes in world history, Krakatau, takes center stage at the beginning of this trip. Its legendary eruption in 1883 dramatically altered the global climate and remains one of the most powerful volcanic events ever recorded.
Today, you can visit the remnants of that eruption — the stunning islands that rose from the sea where the old Krakatau once stood.

After breakfast, we travel by minibus from Jakarta to the west coast of Java, passing through tropical countryside, small villages, and lush rice fields. Upon arrival near Anyer or Carita Beach, we visit the local volcano observatory, where we receive an introduction to the fascinating geological history of Krakatau and its monitoring activities.

Afterwards, we board a speedboat and set out across the Sunda Strait toward the legendary Krakatau Archipelago. During the ride, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the sea and surrounding islands. Depending on visibility, the silhouette of Anak Krakatau (“the Child of Krakatau”) soon appears on the horizon — a young volcano that has been growing from the sea since the great eruption of 1883.

In the afternoon, we land on Rakata Island, one of the remaining fragments of the original Krakatau. We set up camp directly on the beach, surrounded by black volcanic sand, tropical vegetation, and the distant rumble of the active volcano. As the sun sets, the view of Krakatau across the water creates an unforgettable atmosphere — a perfect start to your volcano adventure in Indonesia.

Depending on the current activity of Anak Krakatau, today is entirely devoted to exploring the volcano and its surrounding islands. After breakfast at the beach camp, we cross by boat to Anak Krakatau (“the Child of Krakatau”), which has been rising from the sea since its first eruption in 1927. With its black ash slopes, steaming vents, and constantly changing landscape, it offers a truly spectacular natural setting.

Accompanied by your experienced guides, you’ll learn about the geological history and ongoing volcanic activity that shaped this remarkable archipelago. Short hikes on the lower flanks of the volcano reveal layers of solidified lava, volcanic bombs, and fields of young vegetation reclaiming the island.

But Krakatau is not only about the volcano itself — the tropical flora, coastal mangroves, and large monitor lizards that inhabit the beaches make it an ideal destination for photography and nature observation. The ever-changing play of light and color, combined with the dramatic backdrop of the smoking cone, offers countless opportunities for unforgettable shots.

During the day, our Indonesian cook team prepares delicious local specialties, served picnic-style on the beach or aboard the boat. As evening approaches, you can relax and enjoy the sound of the sea and the distant rumble of the volcano — a truly unique experience in one of the world’s most famous volcanic landscapes.

The morning is ideal for further observation and photography of the volcano. You’ll have time to capture the changing light and the steaming crater of Anak Krakatau before returning to camp for an early lunch.

Around midday, we board the speedboat for the journey back across the Sunda Strait to Java’s west coast. On the way, we make a stop at a coral reef, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim or snorkel among colorful tropical fish in the clear waters.

After breakfast, we begin our scenic journey through the beautiful landscapes of West Java toward the lively university city of Garut. The drive takes us through fertile volcanic plains, lush tropical forests, and countless rice terraces that shimmer in shades of green and gold — a quintessential image of Indonesia’s rural beauty.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of several impressive volcanoes, including Mount Guntur and Mount Papandayan, which dominate the skyline of the region. Small villages and bustling roadside markets provide fascinating glimpses into everyday life in Java.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Garut, a pleasant highland town surrounded by steaming hot springs and dramatic mountain scenery. After checking in at our comfortable hotel, there’s time to relax or take a stroll through the town before a delicious Indonesian dinner is served.

Today’s excursion takes you into the otherworldly volcanic landscape of Mount Papandayan, one of the most fascinating and photogenic volcanoes in West Java. The trail leads through a steaming crater area, where fumaroles hiss, and sulfur gases rise from the ground — a vivid reminder that the volcano remains very much alive beneath your feet.

Small, acidic streams carry colorful mineral deposits, painting the rocks in shades of yellow, orange, and green. Despite the seemingly hostile environment, ferns and hardy plants thrive here, providing food for rare species of butterfly caterpillars. In some places, delicate sulfur crystals form around the vents, shimmering in the light — a paradise for photographers and geology enthusiasts alike.

If the weather is clear, you’ll also have a magnificent view of the distant Galunggung Volcano, another impressive stratovolcano with a dramatic eruption history.

After exploring this extraordinary landscape, we return to Garut in the afternoon to relax and enjoy another evening of excellent Indonesian cuisine.

The volcanic region surrounding Garut is one of West Java’s most fascinating geothermal areas, dotted with active volcanic systems, hot springs, and boiling mud pools. These landscapes reveal the immense geothermal energy beneath Java’s surface and offer some of the most striking photographic opportunities of the journey.

We spend the day exploring several hydrothermal fields, where steam rises from fissures, and mineral-rich waters color the ground in vivid shades of yellow, orange, and white. At Cipanas, one of the most famous hot spring areas in Indonesia, you can experience bubbling pools and natural vents surrounded by tropical vegetation — a perfect combination of raw volcanic energy and serene nature.

Throughout the day, your guide explains how geothermal processes shape these unique environments and how local communities have adapted to living in such a dynamic volcanic landscape.

Traveling through Indonesia by train is a truly special experience. As the train winds its way through lush volcanic landscapes, you’ll pass endless rice terraces, tropical forests, and small villages, offering a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of rural Java. In the afternoon, we reach Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java. This vibrant city is famous for its traditional arts, royal heritage, and rich blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and Javanese influences. After checking into our charming hotel in the old town, we visit the magnificent Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As the sun sets behind the ancient spires, the scene becomes truly magical. In the evening, those who wish can attend a spectacular open-air performance of the Ramayana Ballet, staged with the illuminated Prambanan temples as a breathtaking backdrop — a highlight of any journey through Java.

On your free day, take the opportunity to explore the old town of Yogyakarta — visit its lively markets, the historic Sultan’s Palace (Kraton), or the beautiful Water Castle (Taman Sari). You might even enjoy discovering the city from a traditional becak (rickshaw), a fun and authentic way to experience local life.

Your tour leader will be happy to share great suggestions and insider tips for sightseeing, shopping, or tasting delicious Javanese specialties.

In the late morning, we leave Yogyakarta with light luggage for an overnight excursion to two of Central Java’s most iconic landmarks. Our first destination is the monumental Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in all of Asia and one of the greatest archaeological treasures in the world.

Built between AD 750 and 850, Borobudur is an extraordinary masterpiece of architecture and symbolism. Over a thousand intricate relief panels and hundreds of serene Buddha statues adorn its terraced levels, representing the path to enlightenment. The temple was partly buried for centuries under volcanic mudflows from Mount Merapi before being rediscovered and excavated in 1815.

A guided English-language tour will introduce us to the fascinating history, spiritual meaning, and artistic details of the site. Afterwards, there will be ample time to wander freely through the complex, explore the terraces, and absorb the peaceful atmosphere that surrounds this UNESCO World Heritage monument.

In the afternoon, we continue our journey toward the southern slopes of Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active and closely monitored volcanoes. Here, we can observe the traces of recent eruptions — including lava flows, ash-covered landscapes, and remnants of villages affected by past activity — a vivid reminder of Java’s dynamic volcanic nature.

A short domestic flight takes us to Surabaya, East Java’s largest city. From there, we drive to Malang, a pleasant highland town known for its colonial architecture and mild climate, where we stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, the journey continues in 4x4 jeeps, taking us through the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Tengger Massif. The route crosses rugged terrain, winding mountain roads, and eventually descends into the vast Tengger Caldera, one of the most spectacular geological formations in Indonesia.

By evening, we reach Cemoro Lawang, a small mountain village perched on the caldera rim, offering breathtaking views over the Sea of Sand and the smoking cone of Mount Bromo.

The Tengger Caldera is one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes on Earth — a vast, moon-like plain surrounded by steep crater walls and dotted with several volcanic cones, including the famous Mount Bromo.

Today is entirely devoted to exploring and photographing this breathtaking scenery. Early risers may want to head to one of the nearby viewpoints for a sunrise over Mount Bromo, when the first light of day reveals the dramatic shapes of the caldera and the plume of smoke rising from the crater.

Later, you can hike across the Sea of Sand, a vast expanse of volcanic ash, and climb up to the rim of Mount Bromo’s crater (if volcanic activity allows). From the top, you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable views into the steaming crater and across the surrounding peaks of the Tengger Massif.

In the nearby village, a visit to the Buddhist monastery of Ngadisari provides a glimpse into the region’s unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and local Tenggerese traditions — a fascinating cultural experience.

Overnight: As before near Mount Bromo (B, L, D)

Today’s journey takes us through some of the wildest and most scenic landscapes of East Java. The road winds through mountainous terrain, dense tropical forests, and fertile valleys, offering spectacular views and glimpses of local village life along the way.

As we approach the Ijen Massif, the landscape becomes increasingly volcanic — a region shaped by countless eruptions over thousands of years. In the afternoon, there’s time to relax in a natural volcanic hot spring, where warm mineral-rich waters invite you to unwind after the long drive.

If time permits, we also visit a nearby coffee plantation, where you can learn about Java’s long coffee-growing tradition and sample some of the region’s finest brews amid lush green hillsides.

Overnight: Ijen Lodge (B, L, D)

Before sunrise, we begin our ascent to the crater of Mount Ijen, one of the most extraordinary volcanic landscapes in Indonesia. The hike, taken in the cool early morning hours, leads through lush mountain forests before the vegetation gives way to the stark, otherworldly terrain of the upper slopes.

At the summit, a breathtaking sight awaits you — the turquoise-colored crater lake, one of the world’s largest highly acidic lakes, surrounded by cliffs that shimmer in the morning light. From numerous sulfur fumaroles, clouds of gas rise constantly, and during the night they produce the famous “blue flames”, a rare natural phenomenon caused by burning sulfur.

Another unforgettable impression is the encounter with the local sulfur miners, who descend into the crater to extract solidified sulfur and carry heavy loads back up the steep trail. Their incredible endurance and strength leave a lasting impression on every visitor — and provide powerful subjects for photography.

After plenty of time to enjoy and photograph this spectacular scenery, we return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.

Drive to the harbor and take the ferry across to the island of Bali, enjoying beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding coastline during the short crossing. Upon arrival, transfer to a comfortable beach hotel, where you can relax and unwind after the journey — the perfect place to spend your final night in Indonesia.

Steep Ascents & Elevation Gain

The climb to the Ijen Crater (starting around midnight) is steep and demanding, and even participants with average fitness levels often find it physically challenging due to the altitude and incline.
The descent into the crater is even more difficult: a narrow, rocky trail with loose gravel and uneven ground.
On multi-day trekking tours across Java, you can expect 5–8 hours of hiking per day.
Trails vary from paved roads and dirt paths to volcanic ash, rocks, and forest trails — good balance and stability are essential.

Early Starts & Night Hikes

Many volcano hikes begin very early, often around 1:00 a.m., to reach the summit before sunrise and witness natural phenomena such as the blue flames of Ijen.
Trails are dark and uneven — a headlamp and careful footing are crucial.

Altitude & Weather Conditions

Some volcanoes and viewpoints reach elevations of 2,500–2,800 meters (8,200–9,200 feet) — for example, Mount Ijen at about 2,799 meters.
Early mornings can be surprisingly cold, so warm layers are recommended even in tropical regions.
Humidity, rain, and rapidly changing weather conditions are common and can make paths slippery.

Endurance & Fitness

A good level of physical fitness and endurance is required to walk uphill for several hours and to manage long travel days.
Knees, calves, and ankles are under continuous strain — pre-trip conditioning such as hiking, stair climbing, or regular walking is highly recommended.
Participants should be able to handle moderate physical effort over several consecutive days and cope with early starts and short nights.

Technical Skills & Safety

Proper hiking shoes with good grip and ankle support are essential.
Sure-footedness is required, especially on loose volcanic terrain and steep sections.
Some areas involve narrow paths or steep descents that require focus and caution.
In certain national parks, authorities may request a basic medical fitness certificate before the hike.
